Today, I am forwarding my husband Kanhaiya’s insights of what Guru Purnima, a major Indian celebration that co-incided with today’s World Healing, is all about:
” Learning is an endless process and Guru is the infinite limit ”
The full moon day of Ashad month ( July – Aug), according to Hindu calender is the day of paying respect and acknowledging the debt of the Spritual Teacher who has shown you the Way (Path) to the state of Liberation breaking the bonds of mundane earthly life.
Shri Bhagawan Vyas rishi (Awakened soul) who was a great spiritual person who edited four Vedas and wrote 18 Puranas, Mahabharat, and Srimad Bhgwad Gita. He also was the guru of Lord Dattatreya deity.
The whole humanity is indebted to Vyas rishi for his spiritual compositions and as such particularly Hindus perform pooja of Vyas guru on this full moon day called Guru Purnima for the great service he rendered .
From this day onwards the four months of rainy season starts and all the devotees gather and observe pennance and undergo spiritual sadhana (process) to purify one self under the guidence of their spiritual guru. During these four months they live on fruits and milk which is the yogic diet necessary for the advancement in spirituality.
This tradition called as ‘Guru– Shishya Parampare’, Master disciple lineage, observed in India in the forest civilization era. Even now throughout India this tradition is alive.”
