“Archangel Azrael is an archangel known in both Hebrew and Muslim circles. He is also known as Azrail, Ashriel, Azriel, Azaril and the Angel of Death.
Azrael’s name means ‘whom God helps.’ His role is primarily to help people cross over to Heaven at the time of physical death. Azrael comforts people prior to their physical passing, making sure they don’t suffer during death, and helps them assimilate on the other side.
He also surrounds grieving family members with healing energy and Divine light to help them cope and thrive. Azrael lends support to surviving friends and family members, easing their journey in material, spiritual and emotional ways.

If you’ve lost someone, call upon Azrael for support and comfort. Azrael also works with grief counselors to shield them from absorbing their clients’ pain, and to guide their words and actions for maximum effectiveness. Call upon Azrael to bring comfort to a dying loved one, and to help during the time of crossing over. Azrael will be there for everyone concerned. You can also ask Azrael to help your departed loved one, and to meet with him or her in Heaven.
Archangel Azrael is very quiet and composed. He has great respect for the grieving process, and he does not impose upon those who are going through it. Moreover, Azrael stands by as a source of quiet strength and comfort.
He says:
During sleepless nights of anxious grieving, where you toss and turn, I can ease your restless mind and help you sleep. A rested mind and body is stronger and more able to withstand the grieving process.
So, do not hesitate to call on me for my prayers, assistance, or intercession during times of need. I will invoke other angels alongside you and your loved ones, and we will do everything within God’s power to support your with dynamic love.
Azreal helps with
1. Comforing the dying and the grieving
2. Crossing over the newly deceased person’s soul
3. Grief counseling
4. Support for the grieving – material, spiritual, and emotional. Invocation No special attire or behavior is necessary to call upon Archangel Azrael — just a sincere desire to help in a situation involving grief or death. Just think the thought and Azrael is there.
A sample invocation is:
Archangel Azrael, please comfort me now. Please help me to heal. Please lift my heart above heaviness and help me realize the blessings that this situation holds. Please help me release my tears and connect to my beloved in Heaven. I ask that you infuse this connection with energy so that I may clearly communicate with (him or her). I know that my beloved one is nearby and that you watch over both of us. (If there is any situation related to the grief that you need help with, tell Azrael about it now.). Thank you, Azrael. ”
The above is an excerpt from the book ‘Archangels & Ascended Masters’ by Doreen Virtue. This is an excellent book that I highly recommend to any beginning channeler who wishes to know more about the various deities from around the world to call upon.
As we approach the holiday season, I think more about angels and their meaning to us. Thanks for enlightening me about Azrael.
What a wonderful description of Azrael.
Being both a bereaved person myself and working with bereaved people it’s comforting to know that there’s an angel out there just for grief.
