Who was Mikao Usui Sensei?

Mikao Usui Sensei was born August 15, 1865 in Kyoto, Japan.  He grew up in an actively practicing Tendai Buddhist family, and entered a Tendai Buddhist monastry near Mt. Kurama as a child.

Usui Sensei, a Young Master of Martial Art

The young Mikao studied kiko (chi gong) to an advanced level.

When he was 12, Usui started his martial arts training in Yagyu Ryu, samurai swordsmanship, in which he later obtained the highest level of mastery, and was highly respected in the martial arts community in his ’20s and  beyond.

He married Sadako, with whom he had a son in 1907, and a daughter.

Usui

Usui’s Professional Career Development

In a country where conformism prevails, Usui Sensei was considered an unusual man. One could say ‘eccentric’. Consequently, he held a wide range of somewhat unusual professions that matched his background: public servant, office worker, industrialist, reporter, politician’s secretary, missionary, and supervisor of convicts.

Usui was private secretary to Shimpei Goto, who was Secretary of the Railroad, Postmaster General, and Secretary of the Interior and State. ‘It seems that his duties were unclear, as it was considered that his role a politician’s secretary could be taken as a fancy title for ‘bodyguard’! Regardless, it was during his time in diplomatic service that he may have had the opportunity to travel to other countries.   Usui travelled to China, America and Europe several times to learn and study Western ways, and this practice was encouraged in the Meiji era.

For a while Usui became a Tendai Buddhist Monk or ‘Zaike’ in Japanese: a priest possessing a home, not living in the temple.

Usui, A Man of Knowledge

Usui had a wide range of interests, and unceasingly broadened his knowledge. He seems to have studied voraciously. His memorial states that he was a talented hard working student, he liked to read and his knowledge of medicine, psychology, fortune telling and theology of religions around the world, including the Kyoten (Buddhist Bible) was vast.

He studied in a large University library in Kyoto, where sacred texts from all over the world were held.   He was a qualified physician, and studied traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine. His studies also encompassed numerology, astrology, psychic and clairvoyant development.

Usui as Seeker of Truth & Spirituality

In the 1890s, Dr. Usui became a Shingon Buddhist  in 1922, he also undertook Zen Buddhist training for about three years. Many different spiritualist/healing groups were in existence at the time, and one of these – attended by Usui – was ‘Rei Jyutsu Kai’. Today this organisation consists of the most spiritual monks and nuns in Japan, psychics and clairvoyants.

Usui Sensei associated with many people of the highest spiritual values. Some were famous people in Japan, for example Morihei Ueshiba (founder of Aikido), Onasiburo Deguchi (founder of Omoto religion) and Toshihiro Eguchi (who founded his own religion).

Anshin Rytsu Mei – The Purpose of Life

“According to Hiroshi Doi, a member of Usui’s Reiki Association in Japan, Mikao Usui wondered what the ultimate purpose of life was, and set out to try to find out. After some time he finally experienced an enlightenment: the ultimate life purpose was ‘Anshin Rytsu Mei’ – the state of your mind being totally in peace, knowing what to do with your life, being bothered by nothing.

reikikanjiTo achieve this goal Usui researched even harder for three years. Finally, he turned to a Zen master for advice on how to attain this life purpose. The master replied "If you want to know; die!" Usui-sensei lost hope at this and thought, "My life is over". He then went to Mt. Kurama and decided to fast until he died.

Usui was looking for a way of knowing one’s life’s purpose and to be content, and despite all his exhaustive research, he could not find a way to achieve this state. The monk’s advice prompted him to go to Mount Kurama and to carry out a 21-day meditation and fast called ‘The Lotus Repentance’, which comes from Tendai Buddhism. He carried out the meditation and, according to his memorial stone, he experienced an enlightenment or ‘satori’ that led to the development of Reiki. He did this meditation five times during his lifetime. “

Usui System Of Natural Healing in Context of Japanese History

In 1868 (when Usui was 3) there was restoration of rule by Emperor, the Meiji Restoration. Mutsuhito reigned until 1912 and selected a new reign title – Meiji, which means Enlightened Rule – to mark a new beginning in Japanese history.

Japan underwent a phase of rapid industrialisation, competing with the West on an equal footing in a relatively short period of 30-40 years. This rapid change created a climate of ‘wanting to keep hold of traditional culture’. The Japanese people wanted to maintain ancient traditions, while embracing the new, and this is what Usui did when he founded Reiki. Reiki was one of the many new spiritual systems and healing techniques being developed.

Te-Ate, Johrei & Mahikari

“Interestingly, one definition of the word ‘Reiki’ is ‘a system that has come into being through a moment of enlightenment’. Originally, Usui referred to his system as ‘Te-ate’ (pronounced ‘tee-ah-tay’), which means ‘hand healing’ or ‘hand application’. According to the Japanese author Michio Kushi, Te-ate is a traditional Japanese form of healing that has been practised for centuries.

He mentions that George Ohsawa, the founder of modern macrobiotics, taught this palm healing throughout Japan, the US and Europe. Kushi referred to Reiki as one of the modern forms of this art to emerge in Japan, and also mentions Johrei (Purification of Spirit) and Mahikari (True Light) as more recent developments. “

Reiki as Energy Therapy

“Reiki is a technique or method that is based firmly on the esoteric principles that were represented in Japan in the early part of last century. Usui brought together, in a unique way, the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy transfer techniques like Chi Kung (in its Japanese form of kiko), Tendai Buddhism in terms of energy exercises, empowerments and spiritual teachings, and Shintoism in terms of techniques used to control the energies. “

The Origin of the  Reiki Symbols

“The symbols that came to be used later in Reiki’s history also have their roots in Tendai Buddhism and Shintoism. This was done in a way that allows anyone to be connected permanently to a source of healing energy, and being able to channel it without having to undergo many years of practice, and they can learn to pass this ability on to other people very simply. “

Reiki for Personal Growth

“Although Reiki is generally promoted within the West as a healing system, it’s original purpose was for the personal and spiritual growth that would be experienced through the system: to know one’s true purpose in life and be content, to heal oneself and find one’s spiritual path, and ultimately achieve satori.

Mount Kurama, where Usui experienced his sartori, is a holy mountain. It is near Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, a place described as being ‘the spiritual heart of Japan’ – a place with a thousand temples representing a whole range of deities. Mount Kurama is also important from a martial arts perspective, being the place where mountain spirits are said to have given the secrets of fighting to the Samurai. “

Passing on the Reiki Lineage

“Usui trained 17 people to Shinpiden, or master level. There were 5 Buddhist nuns, 3 Naval Officers, and nine other men, including Eguchi who was said to have been Usui’s main friend and student. Eguchi later formed his own religion called Tenohira-Ryouchi-Kenyuka.

The Naval Officers were Jusaburo Gyuda/Ushida, Ichi Taketomi and Chujiro Hayashi, and they went on to form the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. “

It felt like touching upon a golden vain, when I found Ruth’s Reikijoy website. In an email to me she explained that the source of her information about Usui as presented in this article here is from a Reiki Master called Chris Marsh, from the North East of England, who spent long periods in Japan over the last 30 years, and is the only Western Master of Samurai.  This article sheds light on different aspects of Usui’s life and background that were previously in the dark.  It borrows extensively from Ruth’s original text at Reikijoy: http://www.reikijoy.net/usui.htm – You may visit this site, however Ruth has now moved on from Reiki to other modalities.

Your Recommended Daily Allowance for Relaxation

Don’t you just love that title? This article gives a bit of an overview of the various ways we can reduce stress in the body.

To kick off the discussion let me start with explaining that Reiki energy healing therapy is an excellent way to realize an instant relaxation response.

In my experience and those of other Reiki Masters and practitioners, Reiki brings on the state of relaxation so quickly and effectively, as we need to be in a state of relaxation in order to heal ourselves using the Universal Life Force healing energy of Reiki. Once the stress falls away, the real healing can take place.

You will find that several of the relaxation techniques mentioned here below could be used side-by-side with Reiki. Reiki founder Mr. Usui had a strong practice of meditating and was an advanced Kiko (Japanese for Chi kung) practitioner. Reiki practitioners (and their clients) are encouraged to meditate and do yoga, chi kung or other forms of breathing exercise to optimize their overall health.

Overview of Relaxation Techniques

“Stress is the curse of living in modern times. Everyone suffers from stress. And the stress we suffer takes a heavy toll on our bodies, emotions and minds.

Feeling stressed out, worn out by fatigue or just simply having a miserable day, the best thing to do is relax.

Watching television may be a form of relaxation for some, but is not a recommended method by experts. When we watch TV we are bombarded with commercials, ads, sounds and images. So how do we achieve relaxation? If there are thousands of ways we can get stressed, one of them is not meeting deadlines, there are also many ways we can relax.

In recent studies, experts have determined that heart disease is linked to anger and irritability is linked to mental stress. Too much stress brings about ischemia that can lead to or cause a heart attack. Relaxation takes on added importance in light of this matter. Managing your anger and attitude is significant to heart health, and relaxation can help you manage stress.

One way of relaxation is transcendental meditation. Recent studies have also shown that this method might reduce artery blockage, which is a major cause for heart attack and stroke. People practice transcendental meditation by repeating uttering soothing sounds while meditating, this is to achieve total relaxation. The researchers found that practitioners of transcendental meditation significantly reduced the thickness of their arterial wall compared with those who didn’t practice transcendental meditation.

Another study on another method of relaxation, acupuncture, seems to reduce high blood pressure by initiating several body functions for the brain to release chemical compounds known as endorphins. Endorphin helps to relax muscles, ease panic, decrease pain, and reduce anxiety.

Yoga is also another method for relaxation and may also have similar effects like acupuncture. In another study, participants were subjected to several minutes of mental stress. Then they were subjected to various relaxation techniques, such as listening to nature sounds or classical music. Only those who did Yoga significantly reduced the time it took for their blood pressures to go back to normal. Yoga is a form of progressive relaxation.

Breathing is one of the easiest methods to relax. Breathing influences almost all aspects of us, it affects our mind, our moods and our body. Simply focus on your breathing, after some time you can feel its effects right away. There are several breathing techniques that can help you reduce stress.

Another easy way to achieve relaxation is exercise. If you feel irritated a simple half-hour of exercise will often settle things down. Although exercise is a great way to lose weight, it does not show you how to manage stress appropriately. Exercise should be used in conjunction with other relaxation methods.

One great way of relaxation is getting a massage. To gain full relaxation, you need to totally surrender to the handling and touch of a professional therapist. There are several types of massages that also give different levels of relaxation.

Another method of relaxation is biofeedback. The usual biofeedback-training program includes 10-hour sessions that are often spaced one week apart.

Hypnosis is one controversial relaxation technique. It is a good alternative for people who think that they have no idea what it feels like to be relaxed. It is also a good alternative for people with stress related health problems.

Drugs are extreme alternatives to relaxation. They are sometimes not safe and are not effective like the other relaxation methods. This method is only used by trained medical professionals on their patients.

These relaxation techniques are just some of the ways you can achieve relaxation. Another reason why we need to relax, aside from lowering blood pressure in people and decreasing the chances of a stroke or a heart attack, is because stress produces hormones that suppress the immune system, relaxation gives the immune system time to recover and in doing so functions more efficiently.

Relaxation lowers the activities within the brains’ limbic system; this is the emotional center of our brain.

Furthermore, the brain has a periodic need for a more pronounced activity on the right-hemisphere. Relaxation is one way of achieving this.

Relaxation can really be of good use once a relaxation technique is regularly built into your lifestyle. Choose a technique that you believe you can do regularly.” *)

And this last line is the best advice!

Distant Healing Holiday Gift Idea . To Give or To Get!

December 17, 2008 by Astrid Lee Reiki Master
Filed under Distance Healing

In the winter season in North America, it’s the time to be ‘Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas’. It’s a season to be generous, joyous and … spiritual.

That said, not everyone lives this ‘happy happy’ reality, and the practicality of Winter makes people not as spiritually focused as would delight.

Winter is a time that people are extra busy and stressed: finishing projects at work, holiday meals to prep, extra activities to organize or to attend, XMAS shopping to do, and more.

As well, Winter offers an emotional challenge to those who become gloomy without their usual sunlight-fix. To other, Winter means a bit more physical hurt: some break bones, rheumatic pains re-appear, a cough or flu keeps bugging…. Some people actually look up to the holidays fearing the resurfacing of sibling rivalry and family issues.

In sum, Winter can be both a joy and a challenge. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was something out there that could strengthen your connection to the universal divinity, and help you with all your challenges ?

Your Healing Gift

So, I thought to step up to the plate. I’ve created a holiday gift idea that would entail a solution for all.

To write on top of your list to Santa
:

a HOLIDAY Distant Reiki Package
of FOUR 60-minutes-sessions
for only C$221 (US$185)

Here is my gift to you: this low rate translates to 50% off your first session + 10% off your three follow-on sessions.

The Gift of Reiki

What is so wonderful about Reiki in the holidays is that it instantly relaxes you. It also brings you in contact with the Divine, and can help you to become more spiritually inclined. Perfect! There are other benefits as I set out in these two articles: Distant Healing Benefits & Works part 1, and Distant Healing Benefits & Works – part 2 .

I’ve made this healing package very flexible: Reiki sessions can be dedicated to general wellness; specific pains; to a big event; to pain, or a big issue being faced. Or, they can be dedicated to your new year resolutions.

You can buy this healing package online as a gift. A personalized, digital gift certificate will be emailed to you, which you can print on the fanciest paper to give to yourself, your friend, colleague, or family member. Or better: you can give the link to this blog article to Santa.

Christmas healing

Finally a gift that means more spirituality, and … less ‘stuff’.

Love this Holiday Gift Idea?? Your first step is to complete an online application for the person who will receive the Reiki treatment. Upon acceptance, you can make payment for your Reiki gift. Then, your gift certificate will be emailed to you, usually within a day.

This package is for only first-time clients, with accepted applications. Non-transferrable. This offer lasts till Feb 2009.

Reiki for Athletes

By Astrid Lee, Reiki Master Teacher

Being married to a Master athlete, I can not help but be an informed soul when it comes to Reiki for athletes.

‘It’s all about recovery, baby!’ I have heard it on a daily basis for a decade.

So, within this context have I observed the special needs & pressures that serious college athletes, Masters, professional & Olympic athletes all share.

And, I learned the way Reiki can support them specifically. For those of you who are not familiar with Reiki: it is an ancient alternative healing therapy that brings alignment, balance, health and well-being to the recipient’s body.

How Reiki Works

The way Reiki works is that it brings the athlete’s natural healing ability to fruition. It boosts the overall positive wellness of body & mind restoring and rebalancing the person’s energy.

    Reiki as a Training Aid

  1. Reiki can help prevent severe injuries.
  2. Reiki boosts memory.
  3. Reiki improves concentration & focus, creating a centered mind.
  4. Reiki relieves muscle soreness & stiffness.
  5. Reiki helps debilitating allergies.
  6. Reiki improves post-workout recovery, speeding up the healing of old & new injuries.

Rather than tackling symptoms of pain, injury, etc, Reiki addresses their root causes. Once the root cause of the issue is resolved, the body eliminates the effects of the imbalance and thus heals the body and mind naturally. Reiki is completely safe and has no known negative side-effects. Reiki complements medical treatment and medication and may reduce negative side-effects.

Reiki practice releases energetic blockages, tension and toxins from the body, and is deeply restorative. It is a ‘laying on hands’ technique that brings in the universal life force.

Reiki looks like massage but is not. Instead of manipulating the muscles, it encourages the healing of ‘all of the recipient’, not just the muscles.

Some highlights…

Post-Workout Recovery

And ‘all of the recipient’ includes a physical level. Reiki offers a preventative and preparatory therapy in relation to the physical stress of training and building one’s endurance, skill, and strength ~ the obvious core aspects to any athlete’s workout program.

Reiki can help athletes’ bodies heal and recover faster post-performance. Imagine that?! A drugs-free recovery booster! But there is more to superior athletic performance than having a body that heals fast.

    Reiki as a Performance Booster

  1. better strengthens individual sports performance for the host of reasons mentioned in this article, e.g. as it helps to focus the mind freeing it from fear and worry; to strengthen and to relax the body; and to enhance memory, confidence and intuition.
  2. Reiki also leads to better team performance for several reasons. Just as Reiki promotes balance within a person, it also build harmony within a team. It can rejuvenates the team as well as each player individually.

Reiki & Recovery from Sports Injury

Besides helping an athlete heal from athletic performance, workouts, old injuries and other unaligned aspects in his/her life, Reiki is also an excellent healing therapy for on-the-spot treatment of new sports injuries. It can be used anywhere, in an instant. Reiki is simple to administer: all a Reiki practitioner needs are his hands and his mind. This practical nature of Reiki makes it versatile indeed.

Being attuned to Reiki is like having a ‘first aid kit’ in one’s hand. It can be applied to help minimize swellings and small bleedings; to relief head-aches & other pain immediately (if useful); to help heal tissues, burns, sprains and wounds. Can also be applied to breaks, after the bones have been set. Reiki can reduce the healing time of injury and makes the healing process more comfortable.

All that means for athletes is being back faster on the track or field. Sports teams and individual athletes are sure to love Reiki once they start using it.

“My thoughts before a big race are usually pretty simple. I tell myself: Get out of the blocks, run your race, stay relaxed. If you run your race, you’ll win…. Channel your energy. Focus.”

9-time gold medalist runner Carl Lewis

Calm and Together
Reiki supports athletes to be calm, secure & focused in the face of their unusually high stress load. At competition times, there is the emotional issue of wanting to set a personal best and winning, plus the fear of losing. Then, there is the staying on target with one’s own season’s training plan. In team sports, another layer of stress results from working with others: the team, multiple coaches and sponsors. At unlucky times, extra stress comes from having to recover from sports injuries while catering to all the above parties and plans.

Tiger Woods

Reiki can help athletes handle all these stresses and realize a sense of physical and mental calm, and inner-harmony.

A Winning Mind

Attitude matters. Sports performance is not only based on right training; it requires right thinking.

Tiger Woods once said: “No matter how good you get, you can always get better, and that’s the exciting part.” Without a winners mentality of excitement to improve and confidence that one can do it, there will be no gold metal. Not even bronze.

Reiki also helps athletes on the emotional level. It usually brings out a stronger and more positive outlook to life. By helping a person to reduce negative emotions like worry, anger and fear, Reiki allows confidence to surface. With Reiki, athletes become better prepared for competition and athletic performance.

When to Give Reiki to Athletes

As I noticed that athletes tend to be busy people, who are keen on deep tissue massage, Reiki is best administered in the following ways:
* in a series of treatments when athletes are at rest, either by in-person or distant treatment to boost the overall wellness and ability of the athlete;
* as ‘on the spot’-treatment when needed such as in case of an injury;
* alongside massage treatments they are already getting.

It makes sense for athletes to receive a series of treatments addressing specific health and performance issues and realizing overall wellness from a dedicated Reiki practitioner.

For on the spot, topical and targeted treatment as required pre- & post game, it is useful if either the coach, the assistant coach, the trainer or even the athlete him- or herself is attuned to Reiki. Of course, once a relationship with a dedicated Reiki master has been built, he/she may be available for ad hoc distant healing sessions organized by a simple phone call.

Winners Never Quit – Football

Conclusion

We learned that the alternative therapy of Reiki works on all levels: the mental, emotional and the physical. This allows Reiki to help athletes in many ways.

So, with Reiki, athletes tend to feel better, compete better, and are therefore more likely to improve records and win.

Whether you are an athlete or a coach/trainer: Reiki could give you a competitive edge for sport performance & success.

Reiki & MS

July 9, 2008 by Astrid Lee Reiki Master
Filed under Reiki

I recently organized a lecture w/ demo on the Reiki healing benefits for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Self-Help group in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I did some research to prepare and am sharing that with you in this article.

A number of the MS Therapy centers around the world are offering Reiki amongst their available therapies, and with good reason: There was lots of anecdotal evidence from around the world indicating that Reiki was working well for MS patients.

There was one study from the UK stood out in terms of thoroughness. This study with ‘Thirteen Case Studies to Investigate the Effects of Reiki on the Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis‘ (source: Reiki research foundation) revealed remarkable progress on regained abilities and energy, on reduction of pain and depression, and on other important factors impacting quality of life. The study involved 10-12 weekly sessions of Reiki. After major recovery, MS participants were suggested to return for monthly health maintenance Reiki sessions.

Thirteen M.S. sufferers with either primary progressive or secondary progressive M.S. were allocated for Reiki treatment. The sufferers were asked on the first visit to identify the symptoms which were most disruptive to their quality of life. On each visit they were asked to give a score to their individual symptoms, (0 = No Symptoms, 10 = Most Able to Bare). They were timed on a walk over a 10 meter distance on each visit, and there was a visual scale. These results will enable us to show how effective Reiki is.

Summary of Reiki Treatment Results

90.2% Reduction of Lethargy
87% Reduction of depression
78.7% Reduction of Cognitive Problems

75.3% Reduction of Motor Problems
73.5% Reduction of Pain
70.2% Reduction of Fatigue

69.1% Reduction of Urine Problems
62.8% Reduction of Bowel Problems
38% Reduction in Walking Time

This seem to be excellent overall results.

Individual Comments on Healing MS with Reiki

The study also states comments on progress of individuals’ health improvements thanks to the series of Reiki treatments. I am also sharing these comments here, as they offer a more in-depth insight as to how important the health and ability improvements were to the participants.

Comments on progress within individual study participants with MS are tail-telling:

I. “She states that she became pain free after 2 Reiki sessions for the first time in 4 years. After 2 Reiki sessions she found that she was able to raise her arms above her head enabling her to wash herself unaided.”

II. “His urinary problems and cold feet were very much improved after 4 Reiki treatments.”

III. “He stated that he was depression free after 4 Reiki sessions.”

IV. “The reduction of her fatigue as a result of her Reiki treatment enabled her to not have an afternoon sleep which she had had to do prior to her commencement of Reiki treatment.”

V. “The Reiki treatment reduced the time taken to walk 10 meters by one third.”

VI. “She expressed a marked reduction in pain after 3 Reiki Sessions, and a reduction in walking time of almost one half.”

VII. “She had been bed bound or in a wheel chair prior to the start of the Reiki Sessions. After just 3 Reiki Sessions she was able to walk downstairs unaided. Her urinary problems have been very much improved after 5 Reiki sessions. Her timed walk has been reduced by almost three quarters.”

VIII. “Session 9 walked ¼ mile (1st time in 7 years she had walked that far).
Expressed belief that it was 2 years since she had felt so good.”

XI. “After session 3 able to lie on right side pain free for the 1st time in 7 years and lie on her back in bed for the 1st time in 2 years. Able to have have bowels opened naturally every day for 1st time in years after only the 6th session of Reiki. Had previously relied on medication.”

XII. “She has not felt the need for (child abuse) counseling since the Reiki Sessions.
No intermittent catheterisation needed after 4 sessions. Reduced fluoxetine to 20mg a day after 8 sessions.
On the 9th session she reported that she felt better now than she did before her diagnosis of M.S. 4 years ago.

The feelings and sensations in her legs started to return after only 7 sessions. Before the Reiki she was walking with 2 sticks. Since the Reiki she now walks unaided.”

Benefits of Reiki, as Explained by a Recovered MS Patient

If these study results were not enough to become excited, or at least encouraged & hopeful about using Reiki for the benefit of MS patients, the International Reiki Association posted a personal account by a MS recoverer.

Here is an except:

“I was personally afflicted with M.S. My symptoms: elastic bands of pain circling my body, weak heavy legs, impaired walking, no mobility upon rising, dropping things, blurred or double vision, severe mood swings, poor or no bladder control, back pain and swelling, impaired speech, pins and needle sensation throughout my body. My symptoms were aggravated by heat.

I was helped a little by Vitamin E and Allbee with Vitamin C. ACTH treatments brought me out of severe attacks temporarily. Herbs and reflexology also helped. I took reflexology and Reiki training.

One year later I can walk again and I keep improving on the distance. At the start I was lucky if I could walk a block, and today I don’t even think of distance or the temperature. I speak much clearer, I seldom stumble over my words anymore. I have no more double vision.

I practice Reiki, reflexology and massage without worrying about the strength in my hands. Book and needle work are no longer a problem for my eyes. I am very active in alternative health work, taking classes as well as teaching.

As I have discovered, M.S. and Lupus are among the hardest diseases to treat, I feel fortunate to have had the determination to stick to the path I chose. I have worked with a couple of M.S. clients and found that when they start to make great progress, they decide to quit having the treatments of Reiki. I personally feel that I am M.S. free.”

178900_repetition_series_teri-holzmann.jpg

‘Wouldn’t it be nice if we would no longer need them?’

Conclusion re. Possible Benefits of Reiki for MS patients

Anyone with a familiarity with MS is aware that MS patients can have a very wide range of symptoms and degree of severity of symptoms. From the experiences in my practice plus the many anecdotes around, there is little doubt that Reiki will have a positive impact on MS patients.

However, to ‘proof’ the benefits of Reiki with statistical validity, I would need a large sample pool and extensive funds to pay for the Reiki treatment, staff and facilities required for such study. Sure, I sincerely hope that some statistical minds will actually undertake the study. After all, if there was a study with statistical validity, then insurance companies could cover the Reiki treatment to enhance the well-being and wellness of MS patients, which would be wonderful for all.

Meanwhile, all anecdotes and personal accounts combined could make one conclude that Reiki is worth a try and that remarkable healing is a possibility for at least some patients.

A personal note

I would like you to celebrate with me! Georgia Straight, a Vancouver newspaper with a quarterly lifestyle magazine ‘Mind Body Soul’ has dedicated a page to Reiki! (Vol. 4, #11, Summer ’08). I am honored to be quoted for about a third of the article, as follows:

‘Master reiki practitioner Astrid Lee describes it this way: “Reiki, in a practical sense, is the universal life force that is channeled through a practitioner or a reiki master ~ and is channeled through a receiving person, who is usually lying on a massage table fully clothed. The reiki is sent throughtout the body. Usually we work from chakra to chakra, from head to toe, and from front to back.”

“Unlike traditional therapeutic treatment”, Lee said “a reiki master does not get tired from giving a treatment, but is reinvigorated after working with the life energy for an hour. And the benefits to the recipient can be measured by how reiki goes to where it is most needed”, Lee said.

[Lee has also organized a worldwide healing group: We Are One Wold Healing.]

“Reiki is an industry where I start to feel that, around the world, we are starting to connect with each other,” Lee said. “People like to be part of a greater team, and I think that is why the [We Are One World] Healing group has grown so much. People find it, they love it, and they like the idea of connecting with other reiki practitioners, or other lay people, for healing the planet and all humanity.”

There are hundreds of Reiki masters and practitioners in Vancouver. I feel privileged to have been chosen for an interview. Actually, this is the time to thank the angels for their help.

So, celebrate: Reiki ~ World Healing: in the news, in our head, in our hearts, in the world.

Continuation of A Lee’s article, part 1:

  • On an emotional level, Reiki helps heal hurt, allowing the person to view personal relationships from an empowering perspective. It can make you aware of relationships and situations which are toxic. It can brings harmful patterns of thinking to your consciousness for healing. Reiki can help combat smoking, eating, shopping and chemical addictions. As Reiki reduces anxiety, it enables positive choices of action. It can be a complimentary depression treatment.
  • Reiki healing can help in a range of home and business situations. For example, when a person does not feel comfortable in a new residence, as old energy needs to be removed from the space. Another example is when energy blocks to success or prosperity must be removed. It works well if send to a corporate team or department when it needs to function with greater productivity; or when it needs to harmonize with newly introduced systems and policies.
  • Last but not least, Reiki treatment, when enjoyed as a preventative measure, reduces stress and revitalizes body and soul. It loosens blocked energy which would eventually cause disease. Reiki automatically goes where it’s most needed to help you heal on a physical, emotional, mental and/or spiritual level. Beyond this, it can be sent to help specific problems that you are aware of, and want to resolve.

The benefits of distant Reiki and in-person Reiki treatment are essentially identical. Distant treatment has the advantage of being sent to remote locations and to situations where Reiki practitioners could not or should not be physically present, such as a court hearing. Distant Reiki works as well as in-person healing treatment, and you can receive it in the comfort of your own home, or wherever you choose.

    Preparation for Receiving Distant Reiki

Ideally, you have given your Reiki Master has a recent photo, your name plus your physical location.

It’s nice if you can meditate while receiving Distant Reiki. You may lay on bed or sit quietly. You will probably be aware of the energy through your body, and thoughts for your healing might come to mind. However, awareness and meditation is not a prerequisite for Reiki to succeed.

If you can not meditate at the agreed time, just go about your life while the Reiki healing is being sent to you. The distant healing treatment will arrive no matter what you are doing, and you will receive its benefits.

    Distant Reiki Works
You only need to give permission and be open to receiving the distance healing for the healing to work. You don’t even need to believe in Reiki for it to work.

What it feels like to receive distant healing treatment

You may feel heat, tingling, coldness and/or have visual experiences during your distant healing session. All are normal. If you felt nothing, or if you fell asleep, it does not mean the treatment was unsuccessful. Rather, if nothing is felt that may mean that the healing energy was working on some issues other than physical, namely the emotional, mental or spiritual bodies as directed by your soul.

    Distant Reiki Client Testimonial

If you are skeptical about Distant Reiki, consider the following. It is from one of many letters I recently received over the years. It’s written by a client who received a 4-week distant Reiki package, given in the evening.

“… I wanted to … let you know how happy and impressed I am with the work you’ve been doing with me. I have discovered and experienced many interesting responses to your treatments.

The first treatment I received was to help with my migraines which have been defeating me for several years now. During our first remote treatment, I experienced the most unique response, while attempting to relax and receive your energy, I felt a cooling and tingling sensation from head to toe, and was actually able to slip into a restful sleep.

Over the next several treatments, I again experienced physical reactions that I can only connect to your treatments. I found I had ‘jello legs’ because I was feeling so relaxed at times and a new found clarity within my emotions.

“I truly enjoy your openness to discuss your (clairaudient) messages with me and to help me explore my personal struggles. I have begun to feel an inner peacefulness that is quite rare due to my extremely challenging life, both personal and work-related.

I have not experienced another migraine since beginning work with you and I really can’t thank you enough for helping relieve the pain. I look forward to continuing your treatments and thank you again for all your help. I highly recommend you and am happy to express my satisfaction to any of your clients.”

This is just one of many testimonials of distance healing recipients relating to the issues this person had. Your issues are no doubt unique to you.

Distant Healing Benefits & Works — part 1

When healing energy or Reiki is send to another time or location, it is called Distant Reiki. The remote healing can be sent to you, someone you love, relationships, situations and events. It can be sent to any place in the world and to any time – there are no time nor space restrictions. Geographic or time distance between the Reiki practitioner’s healing session and the Reiki recipient has no effect on the quality of the healing.

All Reiki practitioners tell you Reiki supports recipients on all levels: the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual. However, they don’t always help you in interpreting this broad notion. I want to therefore give you some specific examples of how distant Reiki healing could benefit you.

Distant Reiki can benefit you under many, many circumstances.

    • First of all, you don’t have to be ill or severely injured to benefit. Anyone can benefit from Reiki. A Reiki session balances you, offering deep relaxation and harmony. As such, distant Reiki can be very comforting to receive during special situations, e.g. during vacations, dates, marriage proposals, or other situations that are special for you.
    • Reiki enhances memory & creativity. It calms the emotions & anxiety. Further, it brings harmony & clarity. These aspects makes distant Reiki an ideal stress support during taxing situations such as test exams, important business meetings, job interviews or auditions, public speaking engagements, court appearances, sport performances, and even the purchase of a new home.
    • Reiki eliminates bodily toxins. But it does not only clear on a physical level; Reiki has been said to help reduce the possibility of violent outcomes, such as in sports, and to spread a wave of peace amidst chaos.
    • On the physical plane, Reiki can ease pain. It supports traditional medicine, counteracting medical side-effects and bleeding. Reiki is known to speed up the healing recovery process when ill or hospitalized. Reiki can also reduce the trauma of surgery. It restores depleted energy. Distant Reiki or in-person treatment is therefore suitable before/after surgery, medical procedures or child delivery. Reiki comforts and brings peace to the terminally ill.
