I made this list of crystals for a friend of mine who is suffering the symptoms of menopause, and thus needs some helpful friends. I’m sharing it with all women in the world, as seemingly innocent crystals can be a healing aid! :

70% of women approaching menopause are affected by menopausal symptoms caused by changing hormonal levels in the female reproductive system. The most common symptoms of menopause are hot flashes, night sweats, irregular periods, loss of libido and vaginal dryness.

Most women notice early symptoms and signs while still having periods. Typically, in her early 40s, a woman experiences perimenopause: a gradually falling and fluctuating hormone levels. The menopausal transition usually lasts until her mid 50s, and menopause symptoms may last for this entire period, or, sometimes for the rest of a woman’s life.

Crystals as Natural Remedy for Menopause

Menopause is a natural part of life and natural remedies for some of its symptoms are abundant. For example, beyond regular Reiki treatment tune-ups, you can also surround yourself with healing crystals, which each have play a different healing role.

Not every woman experiences menopause in the same way, and suffer some symptoms with more severity than others. Therefore, while some crystals are likely to be good for all, you should really intuitively pick the ones that suit you from the collection of stones recommended below. Menopause is meant to be a celebration of a new phase of life, and with the help of some crystals, you might be able to focus more on that aspect of the transition.

Use the crystals as is most befitting to your lifestyle. Either make a Menopause Crystals set-up for your altar, keep selected ones under your pillow, carry some in your purse or pocket, or create a few necklaces and bracelets that help you heal and stop suffering from specific or general unwanted menopause conditions, such as insomnia, depression, forgetfulness, or other hormonal imbalance.

Specifically Helpful Crystal Stones in Menopause

CORE SET OF CRYSTALS FOR MENOPAUSE

For a core set of crystals for menopause*, consider including the following stones:

AMETHYST

For Insomnia and stress relief. **

If you can find a crystal made of the combination of Citrine and Amethyst (i.e. an Ametrine), this crystal can both help balance your body as well as cool and sooth you.

CARNELIAN

Energizing and depression. Carnelian helps to balance the Sacral chakra, cleanse, clear and emit healing energy to the reproductive system as it goes through this transition.

CITRINE

Aids digestion. Citrine can help to control hot flashes and balance the yin and yang. Working with the Sacral, Solar-Plexus, and Third-Eye Chakras, Citrine can enhance the energy flow between these chakras, ameliorating symptoms of menopause.

Tip: keep a piece of Citrine in your pocket or under your pillow at night.

QUARTZ

CLEAR QUARTZ helps with concentration and decision making. It would be wonderful if you can find a double terminated clear quartz crystal: This crystal simultaneously absorbs and emits energy in both directions, which can help you to flow with the transition/change.

SMOKY QUARTZ helps ground with Earth energies and the Root Chakra. Use Smokey Quartz to absorb and transmute the hot flash energy, which will help to cool the body.

LAPIS LAZULI

For Insomnia. More generally, Lapis Lazuli smoothens mentally and physically transitions.

Lapis Jewelry allows you to always have your healing crystal with you.

MOONSTONE

Balances hormones. Actually, moonstone is a very soothing crystal stone that helps to relieve stress. Many women like Moonstone for its ability to balance hormonal and menstrual cycles.

ADDITIONAL CRYSTAL STONES FOR MENOPAUSE

Depending on your particular symptoms of menopause, also consider the following other helpful crystals:

CHRYSOPRASE  : Restless legs **

FLUORITE  : Helps with concentration

LEPIDOLITE / LITHIUM: can help to cool and balance the body

COPPER:  for balance

SNOWFLAKE OBSIDIAN: brings about a balance to body, mind and spirit.

* Note: consider that these crystals might also be suitable if you are approaching menopausal age or have gynecological problems.

** Note: while just one characteristic has been described for each healing crystal, most crystals have a list of healing properties.

March 8, 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the International Women’s Day.

In these hundred years, we’ve gained many things in the Western world, such as the right for women to receive a university degree, the right for women to vote, the rights for African American women to sit in the front of an American bus, and many more rights, victories and achievement.

2011-2111

Now, after 100 of being change agents improving our lives and the lives of others immediately around us, what are we to do next? What do we wish to see in the world? What are the issues to focus on? What are the jobs to do? …. and just how significantly do we want to take on the challenges that lie ahead?

Or phrased differently: … What do we, Western women 2011, want to be known for, in a century from now? Abandoning Coca Cola in exchange for Yogi Tea??!! Or, something more fundamental than this? Let’s look at the challenges first, and then we decide.

Let’s look at things through the lens of health, or put starkly, through the lens of human survival.

Women 2011, Agents of Change In the Field of Health

“Over the past 100 years, many advances have improved the health of women and girls. Examples include: social and legal reforms regarding the minimum age of marriage and sexual consent; access to safe abortion services (where legal), contraception, mammograms and other health technologies; and progress towards ending harmful practices such as sexual and gender-based violence, including female genital mutilation. “ writes the World Health Organization (WHO).

Where Action for Change is Needed, Today

   On top of the WHO 2011 Global Women’s Health agenda*:

Too high maternal mortality rates

Too high HIV rates among young women

Increasing tobacco consumption among women

Continued widespread sexual and other forms of gender-based violence

An increasingly heavy burden of non-communicable (i.e. non-contagious) diseases on women.

Collectively we must reduce/reverse and eliminate these conditions that we are faced with in the world today. However, these issues are not equally distributed throughout the world, and the issues facing women in developed countries differ from those living in developing countries. East and West: Yin and Yang.

Health Challenges for Us to Tackle in North America & Europe

Non-communicable diseases in women are in focus in today’s health care for the Western world, i.e. North America and Europe.

How to Prevent Cardiovascular Diseases

         5 medication-free strategies to help prevent heart disease

1. Don’t smoke or use tobacco

2. Exercise for 30 minutes on most days of the week

3. Eat a heart-healthy diet: foods that are low in fat, cholesterol & salt; a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products; a diet containing beans, other low-fat sources of protein & certain types of fish; avoidance of saturated and trans fat. Alcohol in moderation (women: 1 glass/day.

4. Maintain a healthy weight. (Women are overweight if their waist measurement is greater than 35 inches (88.9 cm)).

5. Get regular health screenings:

Blood pressure: Optimal is <120/80 millimeters of mercury . Check at least every 2 yrs.

Cholesterol levels: Check at least every 5 yrs, after age 20.
Diabetes screening: Starting between age 30-45, depending on risk factors, test every 3-5 yrs.

E.g. The European Region is the most affected by noncommunicable diseases (NCD), and their growth is startling. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the number-one killer, causing more than half of all deaths across the European Region. **

As we know, cardiovascular health can greatly be improved by lifestyle changes. Less stress and more Reiki for relaxation and balance are two things that come to mind instantly. However, I’m not a doctor, but a Reiki Master.

The reputable Mayo Clinic has 5 so simple ways to improve heart health and reduce risks, that are of the same category of simple life style changes.

Health Challenges for Us to Tackle in Other Parts of the World

In developing countries the health/survival challenges are quite different. High maternal mortality rates, high HIV rates amongst young women, sexual and other violence against women are the main causes of death amongst women.

If we look a step behind these challenges, it’s quite clear that extreme poverty, lack of education, and in-existence of health care for women are major handicaps that we in Western countries may find hard to imagine, but can actually do something about.

We could choose to offer women around the world improved education, improved access to higher quality health care, support for social change to end domestic and social violence and other discrimination against women and we could choose to give them the tools for change they need to improve their lives and so of their families overall.

Are WE Really Meant to Take Care of the Health Care Challenges facing Other Parts of the World??

Almost half the world — over 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.

The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the 41 Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (567 million people) is less than the wealth of the world’s 7 richest people combined.

Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.

Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen.

1 billion children live in poverty (1 in 2 children in the world). 640 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water, 270 million have no access to health services. 10.6 million died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5 (or roughly 29,000 children per day).

As the Western world is a holder of the majority of the world’s financial resources, and of the resources required for instigating the changes required, yes, our support and care is paramount.

I’d argue that once we can feel part of a global community, our society is to pay equal attention to offering solutions for the issues underlying to the common causes of death of women in all parts of the world.

Can We Decide?

Now that we understand these Challenges that are facing women in the World, it is up to us, individually as well as collectively, to support directly and indirectly the various initiatives to resolve these issues.

If we want to heal as a world society, we have so see humanity as a global community and treat all parts as equal. Global cooperation & support, and an attitude of oneness, I believe, are worthwhile values that I would like to see our society to be remembered for in the century ahead. Not just lip-service, but genuine reaching out, sharing and caring.

The World Health Organization has a clear set of strategic objectives that underlie its various initiatives.

WHO Strategic Objectives

Prevent premature death and disability from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, respiratory diseases, blindness and deafness, mental disorders, injuries and violence.

Prevent their key risk factors (tobacco, alcohol, drugs and other psychoactive substances, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity).

Improve nutrition in support of public health and sustainable development.

Likewise, we can make a personal plan of what our personal objectives are, of what the changes in society are that we want to have contributed to, and just begin.

Carnival of Healing #232: Healing Holiday Stories

Today, I want to share with you the submissions for this carnival of healing. There were a lot of new blogs represented. But rather than rejecting these and asking some of my veteran bloggers to submit high quality works, I thought to actually look at what’s there. And actually I could love what I found.

Granted, not everyone gave me their crown jewels to look at, and some are better writers than others, however, what’s special, what’s uplifting in all of these, is genuineness. Authenticity.

For those who know me a bit, one of my most commonly used phrased to clients, students, my family, my neighbors,… yes.. everyone, is: to be the best you can be is … TO BE TRUE TO WHO YOU REALLY ARE ON THE INSIDE. Authentic.

Being authentic is one of the Reiki principles. Often loosely translated from Japanese as ‘Do your work honestly’, this principle fundamentally makes you work from the honest, or authentic, you.

So, below you’ll find a collection of rather genuine writers, of real people who write their story. Yes, I read all articles and provided commentary for your use. I welcome to discuss any article with you, through the comments below.

Featured Blogs

Note to article-submitters: if you are featured in my Best "Healing Holiday Articles" line-up, go ahead and show it off… Here is your badge, just for you, to post on your website. It will link back to this blog here.

LIFE CHALLENGES

Melissa Greene presents Resignation Tendered posted at Get to the Inside.

A Lee: This is a ‘WOW’-article on spirituality. I have to confess I nearly cried as I could so relate to it! You see, living in Italy is not easy, even though it may sound like a wonderful romantic dream to you. It is that too. But there are indeed so many sacrifices and frustrations to go through for the sheer honor of living in this slice of paradise, following my dream of realizing a healing center of sorts. Sigh…

Thank you, Melissa, for your great biblical, spiritual and human perspectives offered in your article. The street I live in is called ‘The Martyrs of …’, which is about BEING the sacrificial lamb… I never liked this idea, so I have been studying what throughout time, it has meant to be a martyr… (not referring to nagging moms who give the best bits to the kids and then complain about it ).

EMPOWERMENT

Laura Grace Weldon presents an article on empowerment, entitled Fostering the Flip Side of Gratitude .

   A Lee: I want Laura on my team. Great gal! You can tell from the way she writes, and what she writes. She speaks with conviction and kind heart. She takes random acts of kindness a step further and then goes on expressing gratitude-letters whenever she spots some goodness. And then, as a women on a mission, she take the next step … Read up what she does when services provided are ‘not ok’.

Erin Pavlina presents <a href="http://www.erinpavlina.com/blog/2010/07/how-to-handle-public-criticism/" target=_blank">How to Handle Public Criticism.

A Lee: An article from someone in our trenches. It makes me reflect that it really is not always easy for us clairvoyants, or any other person in the healing profession, for that matter. Erin gives us an honest account of how she has come to terms with prejudice & criticism for her work, even though she has just been giving from the bottom of her heart.

It ponders the difference between meditating and daydreaming… Long time ago, one of the ‘We Are One World Healing’-participants who has already passed to the other side of the veil, wrote an article on Meditation. Him being an elder from India, the article was quite advanced, I felt, and talked about ‘choiceless awareness’ and other such concepts.

Given that at that time, I had little on the topic of meditation, I felt the need to offer a complementary article ‘How to Meditate: Meditation is Simple’ oriented to a more beginning meditation audience. I think you will enjoy reading it, particularly after reading WP’s.

A Lee: Feels like a genuine journal entry by Axel about him going on a working/meditating retreat in Japan, complete with the aces and pains and joys. (This is an experienced blogger, btw, and you can tell by the quality of the work there.) I think he learned and contemplated a lot more than he is mentioning in this article, and I’m sure that’s elsewhere on his blog, which is all about meditation.

I lived in Japan for several years, so I know what it’s like, although I never worked in rice fields. What an experience! Japan is gorgeous and it’s a challenge. Seems like Axel witnessed both. Like him, I cherish the special Japanese moments one can spent in tatami-mat covered temples of peace and beauty. Now go check out what he has to say. You might like his blog.

As eating mostly veggies is what she basically suggests, I think I’ll stick going to my organic farmer. “Bruno” is his name. 15 km (say 10 mile) drive round trip, but my car is full, and so is my wallet, still, after shopping. Yes, lucky me.

On another note, this article is a reminder to plan ahead and make a list for holiday lunches & dinners. Include all you need.

This avoids you, at the last minute, rushing out and buying food for all the possible dinner ideas you had in your mind at one point or another, plus some extras… I know… happened to me before.

Actually, I have a funny story about Christmas dinner that supports Susan’s case:

When we were still living in Canada, a month or so before Christmas, we were out of power for a long time while it was freezing cold. We curled together around the fire place and all slept in the living room, one night, two nights,…. I cooked what would fit in 1 pot in the fire place…. Yes, quite a challenge when unprepared. Fortunately not the entire town was out of power, just our neighborhood, so we went to warmer pastures after those first few nights. However the drama of the event gave me the BEST CHRISTMAS DINNER TIP ever, and that is: MAKE IT AHEAD OF TIME, and just freeze it. It’s a complete avoidance of Christmas stress. I love it, and yes, I’m going to do it again this year, even though the weather is not as harsh as in Canada…. still, it’s nice to have ‘no stress’ for the holidays. Prepping ahead also makes for slightly healthier choices and I’m sure you approve, Susan!

There are many good things in the world. One of which is a growing outrage at an an ancient fishing ritual on Faroe Islands (autonomous province of Denmark near Iceland) of bringing youth into manhood by targeting pilot whales (technically dolphins), driving them to shore and killing them. En passant, other dolphins are killed also. Believe it or not, but it’s an annual fest up there.

Meanwhile, these dolphins are some of the kindest & most intelligent sea animals, who are really human’s friend. ‘Are they becoming extinct?’ is another conjured up question.

While it is against the law at the Faroe Islands to hurt animals unnecessarily, this scene of killing is gruesome. The visual display of a sea of blood appears to be utterly barbaric to the sane.

Let’s stop this non-sense and instead prove maturity in wise & gentle ways.

Let’s Look at the Facts

The Faroe Island Statistical Office has published the official numbers for the 2009 drive hunt:

* 310 pilot whales

* 174 white-beaked dolphins

* 2 bottlenose whales

* 1 bottlenose dolphin

killed in three separate grinds.

Method of Slaughter

Caught dolphins don’t die instantly. As per legal restrictions, they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with knives & thick hooks. I understand that, at that time, the dolphins produce a grim cry like that of a new born child. But of course, instead of being born, they die.

The pilot whale hunt in the Faroes is, by its very nature, a dramatic and bloody sight. Entire schools of whales are killed on the shore and in the shallows of bays. The knives are used to sever the major blood supply to the brain. This is the most efficient and humane means of killing these animals under the circumstances, but it naturally results in a lot of blood in the water.

While whales were the major food supply for the island, it was argued that it is more humane to leave a whale live in freedom all its life, and then slaughter it in a few minutes, than the way we typically treat commercial life stock such as pigs and cows. The latter animals live all their lives in captivity, are unable to choose what to eat, face injections of hormones, etc. and endure quite some stress of transport, prior to their slaughter.

Origin Purpose of the Ritual

The pilot whale hunts at Faroes Islands have been around for centuries and centuries: since 1584.

Its original purpose was to supply the island with food. White whale meat and blubber has been a Faroese specialty for as long as anyone can remember. Given the prior importance of the whales for the islands, the tradition of the whale hunt is a communal affair, completely ingrained in the local culture. The whale meat of this non-commercial drive is not sold in supermarkets. Instead, the annual catch is divided evenly among local families.

Today’s Situation

However, it is no longer smart to eat any of the hundreds of whales caught and killed. In November 2008 the chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered safe for human consumption because of the levels of toxins in the whales (too much mercury, PCBs and DDT derivatives) .

Furthermore, in today’s Faroes, there is amply alternative food supply. Whale killing has become completely unnecessary.

Meanwhile, there is ongoing debate whether the pilot whale is becoming extinct. This is particularly an issue in the case of Faroe Islands.

So, what exactly is the purpose of these ancient fests other than showing off bravery in the process of the hunt??

It seems a simple conclusion that …

it’s time for a change.

Looking at a Slightly Bigger Scope: Other Dolphin & Whale Hunts

The situation in Faroe Islands are non-commercial hunts. Other such smaller, non-commercial hunts take place in in the Arctic, the Caribbean, Peru, and the Solomon Islands. However, a commercial hunts take place in Taiji (Japan), where annually 2000 dolphins are killed. Their meat is sold in Japanese supermarkets. As well, the Japanese fishermen supplement their income by taking about a hundred dolphins alive and selling them for tens of thousands of dollars each to aquariums in Asia and EAU. Greenpeace is working on this very issue of whaling in Japan, and asking for your signature support.

Seeing to the Bigger Picture of Environmental Protection & Change

To learn more about what is going on in our natural environment and how we can and should protect it better, there are many issues for us to take action on. Greenpeace has done a good job on sorting out some of our priorities:

The acid-alkaline balance of your body has a strong impact on how energetic you feel and your health. Some people are naturally more alkaline, and have apparently endless source of energy no matter how much energy they consume and are slim no matter how bad they eat. The acid-alkaline balance is expressed in pH, with a 7 being neutral, below 7 acidic, and above 7 alkaline. In optimal health, the human body’s blood is in a slight alkaline state, with a ph of 7.4.

The prevailing Western lifestyle and food intake is very acidic, which causes both a feeling of low energy and a breakdown of the body, sooner or later. Want to be full of energy, feel good and be healthy instead? Read our prior blog article on alkaline foods to restore a healthy balance in your body.

That article was a basic general primer.

Now I’d like to introduce this follow-on article on alkaline foods and alkaline lifestyle that is a bit more specific. It’s written by Dr. Robert Young ans is called ‘The Top Ten Causes of Death Can Be Prevented’:

“There is a lot you can do to decrease your risk of many of the major acidic causes of death in the US. An alkaline lifestyle and diet and at least 1 hour of exercise a day can increase 15 to 20 years to your life and prevent all sickness, dis-ease and most accidents.

Top 10 Preventions

Here are the top ten preventable deaths in the USA (together with their preventions):

1. Heart Disease

* % of Deaths: 27
* Prevention Methods: maintain the alkaline design of the body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. This includes eating and drinking more chlorophyll, oil, alkaline water, mineral salts and exercising at least one hour daily.

2. Cancer

* % of Deaths: 23
* Prevention Methods: maintain the alkaline design of the body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. This includes eating and drinking more chlorophyll, oil, alkaline water, mineral salts and exercising at least one hour daily.

3. Stroke

* % of Deaths: 6
* Prevention Methods: maintain the alkaline design of the body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. This includes eating and drinking more chlorophyll, oil, alkaline water, mineral salts and exercising at least one hour daily.

4. Chronic lower respiratory disease

* % of Deaths: 5
* Prevention Methods: maintain the alkaline design of the body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. This includes eating and drinking more chlorophyll, oil, alkaline water, mineral salts and exercising at least one hour daily.

5. Accidents

* % of Deaths: 4.5 (motor vehicles accidents: 2%)
* Prevention Methods: increase mental clarity, awareness, sharp impulses, visual acuity, a more peaceful and safe driving approach with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. This includes eating and drinking more chlorophyll, oil, alkaline water, mineral salts and exercising at least one hour daily.

6. Diabetes

* % of Deaths: 3
* Prevention Methods: maintain the alkaline design of the body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. This includes eating and drinking more chlorophyll, oil, alkaline water, mineral salts and exercising at least one hour daily.

7. Alzheimer’s disease

* % of Deaths: 3
* Prevention Methods: keep your mind fit by maintaining the alkaline design of the body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. This includes eating and drinking more chlorophyll, oil, alkaline water, mineral salts and exercising at least one hour daily.

8. Influenza and pneumonia

* % of Deaths: 2

9. Kidney disease

* % of Deaths: 2
* Prevention Methods: maintain the alkaline design of the body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. This includes eating and drinking more chlorophyll, oil, alkaline water, mineral salts and exercising at least one hour daily.

10. Septicemia

14.6% of all mortality in the US is from other causes which are related to acidic lifestyle and dietary choices.

Sickness and disease is not something you get or catch, it is something you do. You don’t get cancer you do cancer with your lifestyle and dietary choices. For example, if you smoke you are doing lung cancer. If you drink alcohol you are doing liver and/or kidney disease. If you eat pure acid like sugar and/or animal protein you are doing diabetes or bowel cancer. The top ten killers in the US are ALL caused by personal dietary and lifestyle choice.”

Food for Life Global represents the world’s largest vegetarian food relief. With roots in India’s Vedic food culture, projects in 50 countries, a strong heritage of respect for the environment, and a current distribution of more than 400,000 meals daily, the charity is beginning to make a significant impact on world consciousness.

How so? The mission of Food for Life is to bring about peace and prosperity in the world through the liberal distribution of pure vegetarian meals. Food for Life strongly believes that the reason there is so much violence in the world is because of man’s inability to see the equality of all beings. The pure vegetarian meals we serve, therefore, are a statement of respect for other species and a call to a more humane way of life.

Just like us, animals feel pain. Granted, they may not have the intelligence of man, but they do have emotions and are living, breathing conscious beings just like humans. Recognizing this fact is the basis of a truly humane society.

Since food is so central to everyone’s life, it is only natural that it is the most effective medium to initiate change in consciousness. All of us have had the experience of sitting down to a meal cooked with love and felt an immediate transformation of consciousness and reciprocal love for the person that cooked the meal. The fact is, when prepared with love, food can speak any language. Such food has the ability to break down barriers, turn anger into love, fear into trust and ignorance into enlightenment.

When a person is living consciously, they will do so in all their thoughts and actions. Their life will be consistent and in harmony with their environment. They will compliment their surrounding and not disturb them. Living consciously begins with conscious eating.

Food is the most basic necessity of life. It’s only purpose is to nourish the body, mind and soul. Food therefore should give life and cleanse the body and uplift our spirit. Food that is old, decomposed, and consisting of dead flesh, will pollute the body and consciousness, while food that is fresh, alive and nutritious will enrich the body, cleanse mind and satisfy the soul.

Taking such conscious eating a step further, when we recognize the equality of all beings, it will come natural to us to share the bounty of the earth with others and give up all selfish tendencies. World hunger is a case in point, for the issue is not a lack of food resources, but inequitable distribution.

The truly conscious person therefore, does not disrespect other living beings; they honor the environment and love their own bodies treating it as if it were a temple. They live their lives in full awareness of their connection to their surroundings. Such spiritual perspective is the foundation of India’s Vedic culture of hospitality of which the Food for Life program was founded upon.

The conscious person fully embraces a socially responsible and environmentally respectful lifestyle. By becoming aware of our human responsibility to maintain and protect the environment and other forms of life, we will learn to love our brethren and not exploit them. The same applies to our choice of clothing and habitat.

The beginning of this journey in raising our consciousness begins with the tongue. Never underestimate the power of the plate. What you put on your plate is as much a political statement to the world as it is a mirror of who you really are.

Introduction by A. Lee: ‘When I came across this article on food to help you create a more alkaline body, I thought I should share it will all the coffee drinkers (whose habit makes their body acidic) amongst you. However, we will ALL feel better when we follow Mike’s suggestions here. Happy Healing’.

“

What Foods are Alkaline?

There is a delicate balance of PH in our world. I first learned about PH when I had a job as a carpet cleaner. Everything that we used to clean carpets was based on the PH scale. The PH of the stain would tell you what PH you need to get it out. It was remotely scientific. Lately there has been a lot more science surrounding the PH of foods and the PH levels of the Human Body. Here is a list of food that are consider good for helping to restore the bodies ph.

Alkaline Fruits

Most fruits are alkaline.
These are some of the good ones:

apples

bananas

grapefruit

oranges

pineapple

raisins

nectarines

blackberries

dates

Alkaline Vegetables

Most vegetables are alkaline in nature.
These include:

broccoli

carrots

cabbage

cauliflower

celery

eggplant

mushrooms

squash

turnips

The most alkaline of all the vegetables are leafy greens, greens, greens! Get them in you. Wheat grass, spinach, chard, collards, kale, etc.

Other Foods….

These foods are also considered alkaline:

millet, buckwheat, sprouted beans, sprouted seeds, olive oil, soaked almonds.

almonds, chestnuts, fresh coconut, molasses. </li

molasses, maple syrup, honey.

What does it mean to have an acidic system?

Acid causes oxidation which in turn causes decay. Disturbances related to excess acidity are: weakening of the skin, hair, nails, teeth, and bones. Acid has also been linked to problems with digestion such as: leaky gut syndrome, IBS, Ulcers. It has been linked to Candida and many types of allergies. Chronic Fatigue is just one of the many symptoms of excess acid.

Interesting Factoid

In a free range chicken egg, the egg white that acts as a protective shield to the growing embryo has a PH of 9 which is highly alkaline. While the yolk itself has a PH of 6.5 which is just slightly acidic”.

Echinacea root is the all-American immune system strengthener. It triggers production of white blood cells, interferon, leukocytes, T-cells, and B-lymphocytes, as well as directly inhibiting the growth of most bacteria and viruses. Peter Holmes, author of Energetics of Western Herbs, cites it as being effective against anthrax. Echinacea tincture is my first choice for countering infection. (Capsules and pills of Echinacea, if used for lengthy periods, may be counter-productive.) A dose of the tincture is one drop for every pound of body weight. I take this several times a week as a preventative; several times daily when there is active infection.

Usnea, a common lichen, is especially rich in a powerful antibacterial bitter called usnic acid (also usinic acid). I use the tincture of Usnea barbata (a dose is 1-2 dropperfuls), but other lichens show similar immune-enhancing and tonifying properties. There are no side effects reported from use of even large amounts of usnea tincture.

Poke root tincture (Phytolacca americana) kicks the immune system into gear incredibly fast. I’ve seen chronic infection of many years’ standing resolve after only one dose, and acute infection subside in a matter of hours. Poke’s effect seems to be focused on the lymphatic and glandular tissues of the throat and chest, making it the perfect counter to inhaled anthrax, which attacks the lymph nodes around the lungs. Poke is a specific against pneumonia and a protector of the lungs. It contains an antibacterial alkaloid and a special antiviral protein. It magnifies the effects of Echinacea and they work wonderfully well together.

Poke root is powerful medicine – in fact, a potential poison – and the dose is very small. One drop of poke tincture may be taken daily for no more than three months as a counter to possible infection. Alkaloids in poke root tincture can accumulate in the kidneys, making extended use risky. Caution: You can feel spacey and out of your body when taking poke, especially at higher doses. The first few times, take it after dinner and stay home so you can judge your reaction.

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus) is widely considered the single most effective immune tonic and adaptogen in the herbal realm. Safe and inexpensive, it helps the immune system respond quickly to infection and mitigates the effects of stress. Astragalus root is also an excellent ally for building powerful immunity. Both, or either, may be taken daily for extended periods with no ill effects. I throw several pieces of these roots in every pot of soup I cook.

Ginseng root (Panax quinquefolius or Panax ginseng) is another exceptional ally for the immune system, especially when there is physical or emotional stress. In any form (tincture, tea, extract) it nourishes production of interferon, phagocytes, antibodies, and killer T-cells. So long as you need ginseng, there’s no overdose; if you take it when you don’t need it however, it may produce an unpleasant, jittery, speedy sensation.

Garlic has been used to prevent infection for thousands of years; and it still works! No need to upset your stomach (and loved ones) by eating it raw; cooked garlic retains its antibacterial powers, so long as you eat enough of it. During plague times, healers in some areas wore a “bird’s beak:” a stiff cone was made of paper or bark, stuffed with garlic and spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg), and tied on over the nose to help prevent contagion. That’s a little cumbersome for modern times, but inhaling the aroma of a cup of spicy tea (there are many blends available, or make your own) could help you avoid catching contagious disease.

Medicinal mushrooms are not only immune system tonics, they possess antibacterial properties which make them ideal for preventing anthrax infection, according to expert Paul Stametes. A tincture or strong infusion of any shelf fungus with pores can be used, he says. If you prefer to buy your mushrooms, rather than hunt for them, look for reishii (Ganoderma lucidum) or shiitake (Lentinus edodes). Both are adaptogenic, revitalizing, regenerative, and able to directly suppress infection. Side effects, even from large doses, are rare.

But herbs and medicinal foods alone are not enough. What we think, and what we consume, are also important parts of building strong immunity. Candace Pert, visiting professor of neuroscience at Rutgers University, has proven that every cell of the body participates in the immune system through an integrated network of chemical, electrical, and hormonal signals. The immune system is a network, she says, which resonates with the vibrations that surround it. It is as affected by emotions as by bacteria, as impacted by thoughts as by drugs.

Long-standing low-level depression, smoldering anger that is never expressed, bitterness and vengeance projected into the future are all known to depress immune functioning. Prayer, affirmations, positive thinking – no matter what you call it, talking lovingly to yourself builds powerful immunity. One of the fiercest old women I know, healer Margo Geiger, taught me to not only think good thoughts but also to unthink immune system stressing phrases like: “This is killing me,” or “I’m dying to . . .” (“Let’s live for it!” she’d say.)

Specialized cells which eliminate bacterial and viral infections are made as needed by the immune system. Richly supply your immune system with nutrients, and it easily counters infection, building healthy white blood cells to kill anthrax and other germs. Starve your immune system and it will falter, leaving your lymph nodes and other tissues open to infection and destruction.

My favorite foods for nourishing the immune system include beets, carrots, garlic, medicinal mushrooms, seaweeds, and dark leafy greens (including nettle infusion). For rapid results, try miso soup with seaweed and wild mushrooms. Try Immune A Go Go Soup from my book Breast Cancer? Breast Health!

Carotenes strengthen and activate all parts of the immune system, especially the thymus (the “master gland of immunity”). A half-cup of dandelion greens, two cups of nettle infusion, a small baked sweet potato, or two large cooked carrots or beets is a “dose;” but ten times that much can be consumed safely. Repeated doses provide a cumulative effect starting about a week after you begin.

Selenium is a trace mineral with special abilities for building a healthy immune system. Best sources are organic garlic, medicinal mushrooms, and astragalus. Zinc helps build energetic white blood cells (which eliminate bacterial infections). Best sources are Echinacea, nettles, and seaweed.

The B-vitamin complex, especially B6 (pyridoxine), is critical to immune system health. Best sources are potato skins, broccoli, prunes, and lentils.

Virtually all drugs depress the immune system. This includes caffeine and nicotine, alcohol, prescribed drugs, “recreational” drugs, and vitamin/mineral supplements. For a healthy immune system, eat nourishing food and forgo the pills.

Both light and dark are necessary for a strong immune system. For optimum immune system strength, sleep in a totally dark room at night, and spend at least 15 minutes a day outside without glasses or contacts. Full spectrum sunlight is needed to trigger the production of important immune system components.

Exercise is an excellent way to tonify the immune system. A number of clinical trials have shown regular exercise to be strongly linked to heightened immunity. The emphasis is on regular. It is better to walk one mile four times a week for a month than to jog 16 miles once a month.

In Summary: Strengthen you immune system with a good diet, adequate sleep, regular physical activity, emotional well-being, and a few of the recommended herbal allies of your choice. Always remember to use herbs and herbal preparations simply and safely. Avoid immune compromising substances such as coffee, tobacco and medications. With a strengthened immune system you will not only enjoy better health, but you will be less likely to be susceptible to infection and possible death from bacterial and/or viral invasions. Faith in your body’s ability to protect itself will continue to bolster and reinforce the immune system as your mental well-being improves. Enjoy the upward spiral of health as you follow the path of the Wise Woman Way.
