Pain represents ailment & illness. As such, it’s normal to consider pain ‘undesirable’.

Having said this, pain actually shows us what needs healing, which is a good thing. While pain medication may be essential to some part of the healing process, we shouldn’t categorically block pain out with pain-killer, as for example healing expert Carolyne Myss points out in her book ‘Why People Don’t Heal & How They Can’. Rather, we should consider entering into our pain and use it as an ally to help us heal.

How do we do this?

We begin by studying ourselves. We pay attention to how many thoughts and attitudes we hold in ourselves each day that are painful. When we write them down - as we should -, we can see all these factors in physical form, which can be very enlightening.

Questions for self-examination

  • Do I always think of pain as an enemy?
  • Did you ever realize and understand anything about yourself from your physical pain? What did you learn?
  • How do you cope with pain? Are you more likely to take meditation, or are you using meditation or other inner discipline?
  • Have you ever been addicted to sleeping pills, or pain medication?
